Pediatric Foot Care

When does my child need pediatric foot care?

If your child has any of the following issues, they need to see Dr. Mehl at Forest Hills Family Foot Care as soon as possible.

  • Complaints of foot pain
  • Complaints of foot stiffness
  • Walks abnormally
  • Falls frequently
  • Difficulty playing or participating in sports
  • Obvious foot abnormality

If you're not certain whether a particular foot concern requires attention, feel free to call the office and ask. Dr. Mehl usually follows the "better safe than sorry" rule, so in general, it's best to book an appointment if you're worried.

What are the most common pediatric foot problems?

Some common foot issues that can occur in children include:

  • Athlete’s foot
  • Toenail fungus
  • Plantar warts
  • In-toeing — walking with toes pointed in
  • Out-toeing — walking with toes pointed out
  • Ingrown toenails
  • Sports injuries
  • Sever’s disease

All children have flat feet, but they usually develop arches by around age 6. Usually, there is no reason to worry as long as they don't have issues like foot pain or stiffness. But if your child still has flat feet after age 6 and you're concerned, a foot health checkup can identify issues and allay your fears. Flat feet persist into adulthood in about 10-20% of children.

Why is early pediatric foot care so important?

Having corrective foot care while your child is still young is much easier, and potentially much less invasive than it would be later in life. Pediatric foot care is very focused on preventive tactics that help your child's feet develop in the right way. This can save them a great deal of pain and other problems later.

For example, your child may have a problem with their foot position as they walk. Treating that issue with custom orthotics now can set your child up for normal healthy movement and development as they grow. Ignoring such issues could lead to problems like ankle pain, foot tiredness, and other ongoing issues.

Prepare your child for success in school, at play, during sports, and life in general by giving them a great foundation for walking and running. Forest Hills Family Foot Care offers premier pediatric podiatry services in the Queens area, so call the office or use the online scheduler now.
